About the Museum

The Anadarko Heritage Museum in Anadarko, Oklahoma is the primary local institution of historical American Indian and Frontier history. Founded in 1936 by the Philomathic Club of Anadarko, the museum collection includes internationally renowned American Indian art, regalia, and pioneer-era artifacts. The Anadarko Heritage Museum hosts community events to engage the community all while promoting far-reaching interest in Anadarko's unique history.

Guests from around the world have visited the museum to see our collection of American Indian Art and regalia. Our collection houses the work of the internationally renowned Kiowa Five, the craft-work of Apache activist and educator Mildred Cleghorn, and pioneer items that once belonged to Annette Ross Hume, who played a monumental role in Oklahoma's library system. The collection contains many pioneer era items, such as American Indian Ghost Dance clothing and Victorian Era dresses. The eastern wing of the building houses only Native American items, while the remainder of the museum boasts of military items, local fire department history, frontier history, and American Indian culture.

Researchers, scholars, journalists, historians, and more have visited the museum to view our archives and photo collection. Several of Annette Ross Hume's photos are on display or available for viewing.

Philomathic Club

The GFWC Philomathic Club is the women’s club whose collection would evolve into the Anadarko Heritage Museum. The club was started in 1899 making it one of the oldest women's clubs in Oklahoma.

The museum photo collection can be dated back to Mrs. Annette Ross Hume, amatuer photographer, founder and charter member of the Anadarko Philomathic Club.  If you are interested in joining the Philomathic club or assisting with the preservation of the photo collection, please contact the museum at (405) 247-3420.
